We all want warmer, drier and healthier homes so the government and local councils have a number of programmes available to make it easier to achieve this.


EECA ENERGYWISE: Heat Smart Programme

If your house was built before 2000 you are eligible for ENERGYWISE™ funding to install insulation and /or heating. Insulation and efficient heating can help make your home warmer, cosier, and easier to heat.

  • You can get up to $1,300 (or 33%) towards the cost of ceiling and under floor insulation if your house was built before 2000.
  • You can get $500 towards the cost of installing a clean efficient heater(e.g. heatpump, wood burner) in your main living area if your house was built before 2000 and you have adequate insulation.

Auckland Council, Retrofit your home programme.

This programme is designed provides you with a free assessment and Retrofit Plan.

If your house was built before the year 2000, you can apply for up to $5000 financial assistance through the council. This can help you get your home retrofitted with what's needed to make it energy and water-efficient and keep your family healthy.

The extra bonus – if you’re applying for insulation or clean heating items, the government’s Warm Up New Zealand: Heat Smart insulation programme has ENERGYWISE™ grants available to help with costs. These are provided through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) and will automatically be included on any quote for these items.

Wellington Home Energy Savers Programme

As part of its award-winning Climate Change Action Plan, Wellington City Council plans to spend $100,000 this financial year assisting at least 800 households to make their homes more energy efficient.

Home coaches from service providers Home&dry will be able to offer simple tips on how to save energy, explain changes that could potentially be made to homes. They will look at a range of things, everything from heating, lighting and water use to how you dry your clothes and dispose of household waste and answer your questions. If you are on a tight budget, they will come up with low-cost, cost-effective suggestions, and people renting can apply provided the property owner agrees.

Hawkes Bay Heat Smart Programme

Heat Smart Hawke’s Bay assists ratepayers with the cost of fitting ceiling and underfloor insulation and replacing non-compliant burners and open fires.  Funding is open to homeowners with properties built before 2000 and options include a non-repayable grant or a loan which is repaid through the property’s rates over 10 years.
